Volunteering Information

A few of our library volunteers – December 2014

Since 1956 when the first Squamish library opened, we have been blessed by many volunteers who generously give their time and energy as a robust part of the library team and they help us provide the public with excellent library service. There are 5 distinct groups of library volunteers.

Library Board: The Squamish Public Library Board determines and adopts policies governing the services and operation of the library.  The Library Board meets on the third Wednesday evening of each monthly except July, August and December.

Nine volunteer trustees, appointed by the District of Squamish Council, make up the Library Board.  Eight trustees are members of the general public who are appointed for two-year terms and one District of Squamish Councillor is appointed annually as Council Representative.   The Library Board Information Package provides comprehensive information about this essential role.  If you are interested in applying to become a Library Board Trustee, please complete the Application to Volunteer form.

Friends of the Library: The Friends of the Library are a fun-loving group who meet monthly for fellowship and planning for the advancement of our Squamish Public Library and to assist our Board and Staff. The primary purpose of the “Friends” is contributing to the pleasant, welcoming atmosphere at the library and to encourage more people to enjoy what the libraries offers, thus making our Library a real “community” place. The Friends usually meet on the third Thursday each month, except July and August, at 12:30 pm in the Library Meeting Room. Attend our next meeting or contact Andrea Gailus for more information.

Foyer Gallery Volunteers: These volunteers work alongside Toby Jaxon, our Foyer Gallery Curator. They assist in Foyer Gallery display setup and various fundraising events. Contact Toby Jaxon to find out more.

Adult Volunteers: Our adult volunteers complete an assortment of tasks which may include: storytime craft preparation, shelf reading, circulation desk support, special event photography, and others. Contact Hilary Bloom, Director of Library Services.

Teen Library Club: The teen volunteers are active member in our library community of volunteers and they meet each Wednesday after school at 4 pm. Teen volunteer hours can be used towards the Grad Transitions requirements. Contact Kate Inman, Children’s and Youth Librarian.
