H.G. Wells’s The Outline of History, which celebrates its
centennial beginning this year, is one of the most famous,
popular, and controversial histories ever written. Wells
dismissed traditional nationally-centered histories, setting
out instead to write a genuine history of humanity as a
whole. Within a decade it had sold over two million copies
in North America alone, and was being translated into
many dierent languages. As one reviewer commented,
“More persons who read the English language are
interested in what H.G. Wells says than in what any other
living man says.” Join Quest Visiting Tutor Justin E.A. Busch
for a lively examination of the controversies, the criticisms,
and the reasons for the book’s tremendous success.
